According to a press release from Annie’s Ace Hardware (see below), their new Brookland location opened yesterday and is located at 3405 8th Street, NE.

I wish Annie’s all the best on their growth and for keeping a long hardware tradition going in Brookland.

Passing the Hammer, er, Torch!

WASHINGTON – This week the Brookland neighborhood will witness the passing of the hammer, er, torch as Annie’s Ace Hardware opens and Brookland True Value closes shop after 35 years. To staff her second store, Anne Stom, the owner of Annie’s Ace Hardware has hired all of the employees from the former Brookland True Value hardware store. “We are thrilled to be able to continue providing the knowledgeable service that community residents have experienced at Brookland Hardware in an updated environment,” said Stom. “Between these six employees, we have gained over 100 years of retail hardware experience that will enhance our ability to serve the Brookland community”.

In addition, Howard Politzer, owner of the former Brookland Hardware has been hired to serve as a Senior Advisor for both locations of Annie’s Ace Hardware. Howard is eager to teach his skills to a younger group of people. “Annie and I believe that the expertise that I have developed over the years can be passed on to her employees to create a true hardware store experience for customers by providing services that cannot be replicated in a big box store.”

The new Annie’s Ace Hardware will open on November 10 and is the second location for the popular neighborhood hardware store. The first location opened in the Petworth neighborhood to rousing success in 2012. “Our mission is to provide customers with convenience combined with superior service through one-on-one expert advice and assistance,” said Stom. “This mission is something that both Howard and I are committed to continuing in Brookland.” The new store is located on 8th Street, NE, between Monroe and Lawrence Street in the Menkiti Building.

The new 7,400 square-foot Annie’s Hardware-Brookland store will be packed with thousands of essential products and supplies from the most respected brand names and best-selling items in the home improvement marketplace, including Benjamin Moore paints, Weber grills, Mrs. Myer’s earth-friendly cleaning products, a complete line of canning supplies, Craftsman tools, and other premium products. Annie’s Hardware-Brookland will also offer many of the same services neighbors expect from Brookland Hardware, such as key cutting, screen repair, glass and Plexiglas cutting, and propane exchange. For the neighborhood’s active gardening community, the store will also include a 1,000 square-foot garden center, which will feature plants native to the region.

Thomas Vedrody, the current Manager of the Annie’s Hardware-Petworth, will manage and co-own the new store. “As we have set up the new store, I have had the opportunity to meet many residents and business owners in Brookland and have been gratified by their enthusiasm for our new endeavor. It has also been a pleasure getting to know the staff from Brookland Hardware …I have already gained a lot of knowledge by working with them and am very excited that we will be able to provide continuity of service to the Brookland and Edgewood communities,” Vedrody said

Annie’s Ace Hardware Celebrates Year Anniversary

February 11, 2013

It hardly seems possible that Annie’s Ace Hardware (1240 Upshur Street, NW) has been open a full year. I feel like it’s only been a few month since I first posted the news that the Park View/Petworth/Columbia Heights area would be getting a new, full service hardware store. Yet, a year it’s been … and a great year at that.

On Saturday, February 9th, Annie’s celebrated their year anniversary with cake and coffee for customers. I understand Ward 4 Councilmember Muriel Bowser was scheduled to stop by as well, but I needed to leave prior to her arrival. There was also a raffle customers could participate in, but I don’t know the outcome of that (perhaps someone from Annie’s can help me out here). I thought it was a very nice way for Annie’s to celebrate their anniversary and in keeping with the store’s focus on providing great customer service and giving back to the community.

Also in that spirit, I continue to notice new services and products every time I go to Annie’s. On this last visit, I read that they will begin a knife sharpening service this week and they now carry Edison style light bulbs — and not just in 40 watts, but also 20 and 60 watts (see image below for Edison selection).

So, Happy Anniversary Annie’s! It’s been a great year with a great area business!

Sneak Peek Inside Petworth’s Annie’s Ace Hardware

February 5, 2012

On Saturday evening, February 4, Annie’s Ace Hardware owner Anne Stom hosted a small pre-opening preview for her investors and supporters at the store (located at 1240 Upshur, NW). The store, which will not officially open until Tuesday, February 7th, received notice in the Washington Post yesterday.

My initial reaction upon walking into Annie’s  last night was WOW! It has a great selection of merchandise and just feels like it’s been there for years. It even smelled like a hardware store — I’m still wondering how Stom pulled that one off.

I believe this store will be a winner right out of the gate. As I walked the aisles and took note of the stock, I couldn’t think of one thing I’ve run to Home Depot for in the last three months that I won’t be able to get at Annie’s!

To give the community both a sense of some of the items they can find at Annie’s and perhaps do a little pre-shopping I’m posting a few photos below and after the jump.

Sneak Peak at Annie’s Ace Hardware

December 27, 2011

Right before the Christmas holiday many residents in the area were pleased to see the signs installed at the future Annie’s Ace Hardware at 1240 Upshur Street, NW. After talking to owner Anne Stom, I was able to learn the additional details.

In advance of the projected February 7th opening, shelving and merchandise will begin to arrive and get installed on the second week of January. The store will have two cash registers, a paint department, the ability to cut glass and make keys, and an outdoor garden section. The patio for the garden section has not yet been poured but should begin soon.

The photo below shows the interior ready for everything that will make the building a business.

Everything that will turn this space into a hardware store will begin to arrived in January

To further illustrate what shoppers may expect at Annie’s, the plan below provides a good indication of the products that will be available.

While the entryway has changed since this map was drawn, the aisle configuration is largely the same and the labels give a strong indication of the products that will be available

Annie’s Ace Hardware Store Coming to Petworth!

August 31, 2011

Here’s some incredibly exciting news … our area is getting a new hardware store called Annie’s Ace Hardware. It will be located at 1240 Upshur Street in Petworth and is planning to open by November 2011. You can read the entire press release here.

The store will be owned by Park View resident Anne Stom. According to the press release it will span 7,000 square-feet and stock 15,000 products and have access to more than 80,000 products from the Ace warehouse.

The announcement also states that Annie’s Ace Hardware will carry the Benjamin Moore paint line, Craftsman tools, and will have a lawn and garden section. “We’ll have all the basic hardware products that people expect from an Ace hardware store, but we’ll also be revising and updating our merchandise as we get feedback from customers,” Stom said.

This is definitely a much-needed and welcome addition to our community.
