Georgia Avenue’s Open Streets Happens on October 5th! Here are the Logistics and Bus Detour Routes You Need to Know

The Mayor’s Open Streets DC event on Georgia Ave (Barry Place to Missouri Ave) is coming up this Saturday, October 5, from 10 am to 2 pm. While I’m sure many will come to Georgia Avenue to enjoy lunch, shopping, or just hanging out on Georgia Avenue, here are some details about the day that everyone should be aware of.

Activities: All activities will be free with a focus on fitness and the Mayor’s Vision Zero agenda. The day’s schedule is available online and you can check out an interactive map for locations.

Parking: No parking will be allowed on Georgia Ave from Barry Place to Missouri Avenue starting at midnight on Friday. Cars parked after that time are at risk of being ticketed and towed to another location in the neighborhood. Those whose cars are towed should call (202) 541-6083.

Motorized Access: Unauthorized vehicles will not be allowed to drive on the impacted area starting at 8:00 am (NOTE: This time has changed from 6:00 am). The route and cross-traffic will reopen as soon as it is determined safe by MPD but no later than 5:00 pm.

Sidestreets: Residents and approved vehicles will be allowed to drive and park on side streets one block off of Georgia Avenue. Other cars, including business customers and visitors will be allowed to enter only at the discretion of the MPD officers posted at the entry points.

Crossing Georgia Ave: No unauthorized vehicles will be allowed to cross Georgia Avenue 8:00 am to 5:00 pm except at the discretion of MPD.

Emergency Vehicles: All emergency vehicles will be allowed access to Georgia Avenue and cross streets and a 20-foot fire lane will be maintained on Georgia Ave throughout the event.

Bus Detours: The best source of bus detours is the WMATA website. Below are the detour maps for Routes 62, 63, 64, 70, 79, H2, H4, and H8.

Park View Community Movie Night is this Friday at 7:30 pm!

This Friday, August 2nd, at 7:30 pm there is a free outdoor movie night at the Park View Recreation Center. Come one, come all to this family friendly event with popcorn and sno-cones. The move is Aquaman!

Movie night is sponsored by the Park View UNC, DPR, and ANC1A.

Come Joing the Community Dialogue with MPD Cheif Peter Newsham This Saturday February 10th

On Saturday, Feburary 10th, there is an excellent opportunity to engage and speak with Police Cheif Peter Newsham on issues concerning public safety in Park View. The following details were shared on the Park View listserv. All are welcome and encouraged to attend.

A Community Dialogue with MPD Chief Peter Newsham
and other guests
on Public Safety in Park View

This Saturday, February 10th from 10:15-noon
Park View Rec Center, 693 Otis Pl. NW (Entrance on Warder St.) 

Please join your neighbors for a dialogue with Peter Newsham, Chief of the DC Metropolitan Police Department, regarding public safety in our neighborhood. Representatives from the U.S. Attorney’s Office have also been invited to participate.

The meeting will include brief presentations from members of the Park View Public Safety Working Group highlighting areas of concern for our community, followed by a dialogue with Chief Newsham and other guests. All Park View residents are welcome to attend and ask questions.

Many neighbors are likely aware that 6 shootings have taken place in Park View since December 20th. This meeting will be a chance for in-depth discussion of how the community and MPD can work together to make our neighborhood safe for all. It will cover both recent incidents and longstanding community concerns.

Wangari Gardens Fall Festival is Saturday, October 28th

The Wangari Fall Festival is this Saturday from 2-5 pm! There will be face painting, a pumpkin carving demo, LIVE music, a bake sale, and information about how to get a garden plot. You can support urban gardening, food access, and local music ALL at the SAME TIME!

Junk & Jam in Columbia Heights on Saturday

This Saturday (September 23rd) is Junk and Jam in Columbia Heights, a day full of great community activities! It is a great chance to get out, meet people in the community, and help improve public safety by getting to know neighbors! The day begins with a multi-family yard sale that will stretch along Monroe Street from 16th Street to Sherman Avenue starting at 10 AM on Saturday, September 23rd. Afterwards, there is a Community Engagement Event starting at 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM on the Columbia Heights Civic Plaza (the fountain @ 14th & Park). It will feature FREE live music, a variety of District agencies, and neighbors!!

Music will be provided by our very own local talent: Cosmic Music Collective, Jim Fey, and Nebraska! While enjoying great music, come by and visit with District agencies and civic groups to learn more about the services our city has to offer. Meet with representatives from: Washington Metropolitan Police Dept. 3D, District of Columbia Office on Aging, Department of Energy & Environment, and MORE!!

National Night Out is Tonight — Meet Neighbors and Police in the Community

Tonight is National Night Out (NNO), an annual event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch. It takes place on the first Tuesday in August annually. Each year, the Metropolitan Police Department actively participates in National Night Out by rallying community members throughout the District of Columbia to join with neighbors and police officers in their PSAs to be a part of this annual event. Each police district organizes a location to assemble. Park View is split between the Fourth District and Third District, though the Third District event is closest to attend.

The National Night Out campaign involves citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from 9,500 communities from all 50 states, US territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. The details and flyer below are for the Third District event.
