The entrance to the Avenue

There were times when I never thought I see today arrive — the official opening celebration of The Avenue.  The event will include a “Taste of Georgia Avenue” and run from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. this afternoon. You can bet I’ll be there and hope to get some great photos of the interior to share with the community on Monday.

The development of 3506 Georgia Avenue goes back years, first with the Central Union Mission purchasing the land and proposing to move their shelter at R and 14th Streets there. That proposal met with much local opposition leading to a land swap, the mission moving forward at the Gales School, and Mayor Fenty announcing that Landex would develop the property as part of a greater Park Morton development in 2009.

The current project begun in earnest in April 2011 with the demolition of the old car wash, Newton Variety Market, and vacant apartment building on the site.
