Annual Ty Hop Basketball Tournament Scheduled to Start on June 24th

As you can see from the flyer below, the annual Ty Hop Basketball Tournament is schedule to start on June 24th and run through August 9th. This is at least a week shorter than last years tournament. Also, like last year, games are scheduled for Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at the Park View Recreation Center. I’m sure more details will be forthcoming in the next few weeks.

Do we know how they will schedule make up games? Or manage the noise and loitering after the games end? Its unfortunate that we could not have a community meeting regarding these issues before this tournament begins again. Its really gotten too large for a rec center this small.

At a minimum perhaps they could be asked to turn down the loudspeaker to a dull roar. Last year I bet you could hear it in Adams-Morgan.

Believe me, its improved from what it was a couple years ago, but your right – it has outgrown the space, and there needs to be a loitering plan in place for after the games end…and with the makeup games it might as well be every night because thats what it ends up.

I don’t think most folks realize that this tournament is open to kids all over the City (I was initially under the impression it was a neighborhood event) and many kids from MD play as well. What I don’t understand is that the players themselves say they want to play MORE games but yet refuse to consider moving to a rec center with two courts where they could play multiple games. Petworth Rec at two courts and bathrooms. An even better location would be the GA ave park at the Old Bruce Monroe school. Two courts and parking. DPR could bring portable lights and porta potties. Its furstrating that the neighbors most effected are being dismissed by DPR regarding these issues.

Given the events last year, I am surprised there hasn’t been a neighborhood meeting scheduled by the DPR and Park View UNC leadership. In the past, I haven’t been against the tournament but I think an opportunity to get the community together is a good idea. After an apparent misunderstanding having nothing to due with neighbor complaints, some of the tournament participants went on a grafitti spree through the surrounding blocks. My brand new wooden fence was tagged along with my neighbors. Since the tag can’t be removed, I’m having to paint it. I’ll be livid if it happens again this year. I’d like some reassurance that DPR is on top of things and that they are working to address potential issues.

Julesonprinceton. I think we were at that same “community meeting” that DPR held last summer. It was awful. Maybe 5 folks from the adjacent blocks and the rest tournament participants. The meeting was a total joke of yelling, name calling and intimidation. At this point, I will only attend a meeting for folks on Princeton, Otis and Warder since we are the most impacted by noise, loitering, trash etc.
