Senior Wellness Center Ribbon Cutting and Opening: Friday, September 10th

September 7, 2010

It’s official, Friday September 10th, will be the official opening of the Ward 1 Senior Wellness Center. As you can see from the flyer above, the event is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. and looks like it includes a public viewing.

This is definitely a good thing for seniors in Ward 1, Georgia Avenue, Park View, and all surrounding area communities.

Senior Wellness Center Aiming for September 13th Opening

September 2, 2010

Dr. Clarence Brown, Executive Director of the DC Office on Aging, was at the Park View UNC meeting last night to address the community about the programs at the soon to open Ward One Senior Wellness Center.

The Center is shooting for a September 13th opening, although the full range of services will not be available until the end of September. According to Brown, the facility will be one of six centers serving the Districts elderly. Its goal is to take a holistic approach to help seniors live longer and stay in their homes longer.

The non-profit Center will be entirely free to DC seniors (age 60 and older) and will have a range of programs focusing on fitness, disease prevention, nutrition education, and other social and medial issues. Visiting non-DC residents will be allowed to use the Center as long as they are accompanied by a DC resident.

The 15,000 square foot building will have reading rooms, areas for relaxation, an exercise room, multi-purpose rooms, areas for computer training, and a green roof.

One thing the Center will not have a lot of is parking. Being located on the corner of Georgia Avenue and Newton Place there is also little street parking to be had. That  said, vans will be provided to transport any senior requiring a lift and the Center will place an emphasis on serving those with disabilities.

Though open to all, the Center is intended to primarily serve Ward One residents.

Ward One Senior Wellness Center Nearing Completion

August 27, 2010

Within the month, the Ward One Senior Wellness Center (located at Georgia Avenue & Newton) will be open. After a conversation with the DC Department of Real Estate Services the other day, I learned that they are hoping to have the facility open by the middle of September. A representative from the project has been invited to attend the next Park View UNC meeting to answer community questions and give an overview of the services this facility will add to the neighborhood.

Senior Wellness Center Looking Good

June 28, 2010

I hadn’t checked out the Ward 1 Senior Wellness Center in a while. As you can see below, the exterior is nearing completion. I’d initially had some concerns about how it would enhance the aesthetics of Georgia Avenue, but now that I can see the play between the red brick and the stone, I think it definitely enhances the streetscape.

I also am impressed that the windows are largely installed and that the casings are bronze and not white. The bronze really plays nicely off the buff color of the stone. It will also tie in nicely when DDOT finally gets around to redoing the streetlights along this stretch of Georgia Avenue.

Senior Wellness Center Still Moving Along

June 2, 2010

Though moving at a much slower pace than the CVS project up the street, the Ward 1 Senior Wellness Center is further along in its progress.  Does anyone know when this project is estimated to be completed?

Work Continues on Ward 1 Senior Wellness Center

May 18, 2010

As you can see below, the Ward 1 Senior Wellness Center is starting to look a little more finished. The rear of the building already has its exterior brick walls complete, and now the facade is being addressed.

Senior Wellness Center Coming Along Nicely

March 11, 2010

Even though it seems to be moving on a slower track than the CVS, the Ward One Senior Wellness Center is coming along.
