Book Talk & Signing on Saturday of Interest to Petworth, Park View History Buffs

October 23, 2014

There is a book talk and signing on Saturday at the Martin Luther King Jr. Library that may be of interest to those who like genealogy or neighborhood history. According to  co-author Linda White, part of the story has roots in Park View … and the other co-author, Marietta Crichlow, is a 65 year resident of Petworth who moved there in 1950.

I recall speaking with Linda after a Humanities event at Room and Board a few years ago, and found her very interesting and engaged. If you happen to be in the area of the library you may want to check it out.

Little Free Library at Bruce-Monroe Community Garden

June 25, 2014

Little free libraryI posted earlier that a little free library was to be installed at the Bruce-Monroe Community Garden back on May 17th. This past weekend was the first time I’d had a chance to check it out and it looks as good as I thought it would (see accompanying photos).

According to an earlier commenter, the Bruce-Monroe Community Garden will store excess books in their shed, and replenish the library if it gets too low. If the library is full and you would like to make a book donation please contact the Garden at brucemonroegarden (at) gmail (dot) com

Tomorrow is a big day for the Petworth Library and the many communities it serves.  The library received a $12.4 million dollar renovation, which included:

  • exterior renovation:
  • window and door restoration:
  • masonry repointing and cleaning;
  • roof repairs;
  • new exterior lighting;
  • improved ADA access; and,
  • a new cupola and balustrade on the roof according to the original design intent.

Renovation of the exterior of the library began in June 2009. In November 2009 the library closed for the exterior renovation. The library reopened on February 28, 2011, and now it’s time to celebrate. This Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., the library will host its official open house. The full day’s schedule is below.
