Bruce-Monroe @ Park View School Organizes Climate March & Host’s Fall Fundraiser

Here are some updates about what’s been happening at the Bruce-Monroe @ Park View Elementary School on Warder Street.

On Friday, September 19th, the school organized a climate march around Park View. Grades 2 through 5 participated, they made signs, and chanted a chant that they had made up – “hey hey, here we are, we’re supposed to save the world.” See the photo below.

The fundraising goal is $7,000.

Here is an example of how the money from last year’s fundraiser was used:
Last year’s fundraiser supported the 3rd-grade’s 2019 field trip to Flag Ponds Nature Park and Battle Creek Cypress Swamp County Sanctuary in Calvert County, Maryland.

In just one day, the schools budding 3rd grade scientists:

  • searched for sharks teeth and Miocene fossils on a pristine Chesapeake Bay beach;
  • seined for fish and arthropods;
  • learned about the bay’s habitats and became environmental stewards by collecting trash;
  • hiked a rare cypress swamp to witness its unique ecosystem; and,
  • participated in a live animal show featuring a rescued Maryland terrapin, a king rat snake, and an owl.

Afterwards, students tested the pH level of water samples collected from Battle Creek, and compared them with water samples collected during a prior trip to the Anacostia River.

The trip was the culmination of a school year’s worth of science trips and programming that included field trips to the Children’s Science Center in Fairfax and the Anacostia River with the Anacostia Watershed Society and participation in an EcoRise grant to improve our school’s indoor air quality.

Fish in the Hood Seeks Donations to Assist in Repairs & Reopening

A fire on April 14, 2017, shuttered Fish in the Hood. Bill White is working to reopen the business.

Back on April 14, 2017, a fire at Fish in the Hood lead to its closure. Since that time, owner Bill White has been working to reopen the business located at 3601 Georgia (corner of Georgia and Otis Place). Here’s an opportunity where you can help! While insurance will cover some of the costs needed to reopen, it won’t cover everything. Fish in the Hood is currently seeking community support to assist in getting this well loved business repaired and reopened.

Neighbors can make donations through a GoFundMe fundraiser. Below is the text from teh GoFundMe page.

Bill White began Fish in the Neighborhood as a family business in 1996, taking orders out of a home kitchen.  In no time, orders were coming in at two or three hundred each weekend.  Our family eventually raised enough money to rent the building on 3601 Georgia Avenue.

For 20 years, we’ve been proud to serve great food with support from the loving people in this community.  Fish in the Hood is a special place because we offer something for everyone, our customers include doctors, lawyers, politicians and actors,  in addition to everyday people who just need a good meal.  We love our customers, and we love to give back to the community we share.

On April 14, 2017, the day before Good Friday, we were getting the kitchen ready and heard someone screaming. One of the deep friers was flaming like a blowtorch, it quickly jumped to the duct work and up to the ceiling. Luckily, we all escaped safely, including Bill’s stepmother Gina, who was upstairs above the fire.

We hope to renovate and bring Fish in the Hood back in operation  (including thicker, more durable deep friers!). While insurance covers part of the costs, we need help from the community to make up the difference.

Since the fire we have had such an outpouring of support from customers, friends and family, asking how they can help. We created this page as a resource to take donations. Thank you all for your amazing support.

Yoga Heights Hosting Fundraiser Class on Saturday to Benefit Member’s Family

Postures are infused with energy through the vibrant surroundings. This class will bring you outside of your usual yoga experience and into a new window of awareness. Fundraiser Underway to Help Officers Injured in Adams Morgan

On June 8th, Brandon Figures-Mormon got behind the steering wheel of his pickup truck in Adams Morgan, veered around a stopped Metro bus and sped onto a median, striking two uniformed D.C. police officers and a city transportation worker. The incident was widely reported (read Washington Post article).

What I think is lesser known if that the two officers struck by the truck were seriously injured. In checking with MPD and beat officers in Adams Morgan recently, I was able to get an update on their condition. One of the officers has been released from care and is undergoing  physical therapy. The other is still hospitalized and with significant injuries.

To help the two injured officers, the FOP Auxiliary, DC Police Union, and the entire greater DC law enforcement community have set up a GoFundMe page to raise money to support the officers and their families as they face months and possibly years of tough recovery and rehabilitation.

Annie’s Ace Hardware Proud Partner of Powell Padres!

The Powell Elementary School Carnival is tomorrow, Saturday May 20th! In support of Powell, Annie’s Ace Hardware on Upshur will be giving customers an opportunity to support the school when they shop at Annie’s. See the announcement from Annie’s below.

Annie’s Ace Hardware in Petworth supports a number of schools in the area but we have a special partnership with Powell Elementary which is right down the block from us. Our employees happily volunteer to be judges at their spelling bees, participate in Dr. Seuss reading days, and host tours of our store.

This Saturday, May 20, the Powell Carnival will be held at Roosevelt High School’s athletic field. As part of this event, Annie’s Ace Hardware will do a “round-up” fundraiser. What this means is that all customers will be asked if they would like to round-up their purchase to support the Powell Padres, the parent organization for Powell Elementary. If your total comes to $13.49, you will have the opportunity to “round-up” to $14.00 and 51 cents will be donated to Powell.

Fundraiser for Climate Action at the Midlands on Friday, April 28th

In honor of Earth Day, volunteers are invited to help out with HotHotHot Fundraiser for Climate Action and Earthjustice, Friday, April 28, from 6-10 pm, at The Midlands Beer Garden (3333 Georgia Ave NW at Morton).

Come hang out with fellow friends of the environment for drinks and activities in honor of Earthjustice the night before the People’s Climate March!

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?
–Yes, this will be a 21+ event.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?
–Midlands is a short walk from the Columbia Heights or Georgia Ave-Petworth Metro stations. There are also Bikeshare stations at Columbia Road & Georgia Ave and New Hampshire Ave & Georgia Ave. There is street parking outside of of the beer garden for those who choose to drive. Midlands is wheelchair accessible.

Arrest Made in Casa Ruby Vandalism/Assult, Casa Ruby Seeks Donations for Repairs

Vandalism of door at Casa Ruby

On Sunday at around 2 pm Casa Ruby — located at 2822 Georgia Avenue — was vandalized and the perpetrator engaged in a verbal altercation with a staff member working at the center. Casa Ruby is a drop-in center and advocacy organization for transgender women which was founded in 2004 by Ruby Corado. As the subject left the building, he threw a brick at the door causing damage.

On Monday, March 13, pursuant to a DC Superior Court arrest warrant, Andrew Cook of Southeast, DC, was arrested and charged with Felony Destruction of Property. He was additionally charged with Simple Assault and Threatening to Kidnap or Injure a Person.

I can’t thank MPD enough for their support of Casa Ruby and swift response, but Casa Ruby also needs help in repairing the damage. A gofundme campaign has been set up “to help raise enough money to help Casa Ruby get better security doors as to keep everyone inside safe and make them feel safe.  The transgender community and especially our youth really need our help right now.”

Please consider supporting Casa Ruby to help them repair damage and upgrade their safety.

Tonight! Park View UNC Fundraiser at DC Reynolds.

The Park View United Neighborhood Coalition — the civic group that serves the northern section of Park View — is having their annual fundraiser tonight at DC Reynolds. Its a good way to meet neighbors and support the UNC.

Here’s How It Works

1. Come to DC Reynolds
2. Buy a drink from one of their friendly bartenders
3. The bartender will give you a receipt good for a 2nd drink. DON”T USE IT.
4. Drop your receipt in the jars provided on the bar. The UNC receives the value of your drink ticket!

E.L. Hanynes Hosts 4th Annual Holiday Bazaar this Saturday, December 1

November 29, 2012

This Saturday, December 1st, E.L. Haynes Public Charter School is holding its 4th annual holiday bazaar (poster below). The bazaar starts at 10 a.m. and is open until 2 p.m. at the E.L. Haynes Public Charter School located at 3600 Georgia Ave. NW (at Otis St., 2 blocks south of Georgia Avenue-Petworth Metro Sta.). It sounds like a nice way to support the school, enjoy some baked goods, and get some holiday shopping out of the way.
