Annie’s Ace Hardware Proud Partner of Powell Padres!

May 19, 2017

The Powell Elementary School Carnival is tomorrow, Saturday May 20th! In support of Powell, Annie’s Ace Hardware on Upshur will be giving customers an opportunity to support the school when they shop at Annie’s. See the announcement from Annie’s below.

Press release

Marvin Mancia, Assistant Manager at Annie’s Ace Hardware, reads to students at Powell Elementary

Annie’s Ace Hardware in Petworth supports a number of schools in the area but we have a special partnership with Powell Elementary which is right down the block from us. Our employees happily volunteer to be judges at their spelling bees, participate in Dr. Seuss reading days, and host tours of our store.

This Saturday, May 20, the Powell Carnival will be held at Roosevelt High School’s athletic field. As part of this event, Annie’s Ace Hardware will do a “round-up” fundraiser. What this means is that all customers will be asked if they would like to round-up their purchase to support the Powell Padres, the parent organization for Powell Elementary. If your total comes to $13.49, you will have the opportunity to “round-up” to $14.00 and 51 cents will be donated to Powell.

We appreciate your support of this event!

WHAT IS EARTHJUSTICE?
Earthjustice is a nonprofit environmental law organization that uses the power of the law to fight for the earth and its inhabitants. They represent a diverse array of clients and coalition partners, from grassroots and community groups to large national organizations. Donations to Earthjustice allow them to represent their clients free of charge, so they can choose cases strategically rather than based on the client’s ability to pay. Earthjustice pursues three key goals: protecting our earth’s natural spaces and wildlife; fighting for healthy communities where children can breathe clean air, no matter where they live; and strengthening the rise of clean energy. If you can’t make the event, be sure to stop by their website to make a donation. http://earthjustice.org/

THE VENUE
The Midlands Beer Garden is Park View’s new beer garden with a large indoor and outdoor space. They serve a wide selection of draft beers, host regular live shows, and have an adorable bar dog, AndyPants. For this event, Midlands is graciously donating the proceeds from select drinks directly to Earthjustice. http://midlandsdc.com/

Arrest Made in Casa Ruby Vandalism/Assult, Casa Ruby Seeks Donations for Repairs

March 14, 2017

Vandalism of door at Casa Ruby

On Sunday at around 2 pm Casa Ruby — located at 2822 Georgia Avenue — was vandalized and the perpetrator engaged in a verbal altercation with a staff member working at the center. Casa Ruby is a drop-in center and advocacy organization for transgender women which was founded in 2004 by Ruby Corado. As the subject left the building, he threw a brick at the door causing damage.

On Monday, March 13, pursuant to a DC Superior Court arrest warrant, Andrew Cook of Southeast, DC, was arrested and charged with Felony Destruction of Property. He was additionally charged with Simple Assault and Threatening to Kidnap or Injure a Person.

I can’t thank MPD enough for their support of Casa Ruby and swift response, but Casa Ruby also needs help in repairing the damage. A gofundme campaign has been set up “to help raise enough money to help Casa Ruby get better security doors as to keep everyone inside safe and make them feel safe.  The transgender community and especially our youth really need our help right now.”

Please consider supporting Casa Ruby to help them repair damage and upgrade their safety.

Meet the Friends of the Soldiers’ Home! — Reception at Chez Billy on September 14th

August 31, 2012

Interior of Chez Billy

Here’s something worthy of support, so make sure you put it on your calendar. The Friends of the Soldiers’ Home will be hosting one of their first fundraisers on September 14th. Details are below.

This group has done a tremendous job so far of reestablishing a relationship between the Armed Forces Retirement Home and the Park View & Petworth neighborhoods. But, to continue and build upon their early success, they need support.

The fundraiser is not only a good way to provide financial support, but also a great opportunity to meet the group.

I hope to see you there!

Friday, Sept. 14, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
upstairs at the fabulous Chez Billy
3815 Georgia Ave. N.W.
Washington, D.C. 20011

Suggested donation: $10 per person

Our July 4th celebration made clear we can’t hold events and meet our goals to serve the Armed Forces Retirement Home and surrounding community without your support.
