Rain Doesn’t Dampen Spirits as Park View Earth Day Beautification Commences

April 24, 2017

While Saturday’s rain didn’t provide the ideal circumstances hoped for for the Earth Day activities planned by the Park View UNC and Georgia Avenue Thrive, it didn’t prevent volunteers from sticking to the task at hand. Two areas in Park View were the focus of cleaning up planting beds and planting flowers — the front of the Park View Recreation Center and the garden area around the gateway sign at Georgia Avenue and Irving Street. As you can see from the short video below, this wasn’t entirely an easy task.

Below are some additional photos highlighting the results.

DC Giving Away Flower Seeds at Metro Stations on Friday

April 20, 2017

In honor of Earth Day, the District’s Department of Energy and Environment will be handing out free packets of native plant seeds. The seeds handed out this year will bloom into white and red flowers and support the habitats of pollinators, like bees and butterflies. In our area, seeds will be handed out at both the Georgia Avenue and Columbia Heights Metro stations.

Earth Day Park View Beautification Event Scheduled This Saturday

April 18, 2017

The Park View Welcome sign at Irving and Georgia shortly after it was installed in 2012.

The Park View United Neighborhood Coalition (UNC) and Georgia Avenue Thrive are co-sponsoring an Earth Day cleanup in the neighborhood on Saturday April 22nd.

Everyone is welcome to participate, and volunteers will meet at 10 a.m. at the Park View Recreation Center on the corner of Warder St. and Otis Pl. and fan out across the neighborhood to plant flowers and clean up neighborhood streets. Pizza will be served at noon at the rec center.

This is a great way to work with neighbors in this annual event and meet new people as we beautify Park View. For more details, contact Chris Waldmann at parkviewunc(at)gmail(dot)com.

Admiring the New Plantings at the Park View Rec Center

April 29, 2016

I wanted to acknowledge some of what the United Neighborhood Coalition accomplished during their UNC Earth Day event last Saturday. Despite the rain,  they were able to pick up a lot of trash and helped spruce up the Rec Center with flowers. The photos below show how nice the entrance to the rec center looks even with the rainy weather.
