Medical Marijuana on Georgia Avenue?

September 10, 2010

One of the more interesting topics to be discussed at Wednesday’s (9/8/10) ANC1A meeting in a while was that of medical marijuana and the question of a dispensary on Georgia Avenue.

According to information shared at the meeting, ANC1A08 Commissioner Cliff Valenti was contacted a few weeks ago by an individual seeking feedback on the appropriateness of a dispensary for medical marijuana located on Lower Georgia Avenue. Most 1A commissioners indicated that they had not been monitoring this issue closely prior to this contact. Valenti additionally indicated that the caller seemed to be feeling out the neighborhood’s response as a result of Takoma Park’s resistance to a dispensary in their community.

There was general agreement and concern from the commissioners that Georgia Avenue was not an appropriate location for a marijuana dispensary, and concern that the current rules proposed for the management of the District’s new medical marijuana program, which will take effect January 1, 2011, weren’t sufficient. Several commissioners also expressed concern over impacts on crime and safety around dispensaries, citing increased crime around dispensaries in Denver, Colorado, and Sacramento, California. (more…)

Drug Free Zone Declared in Southwestern Petworth

March 24, 2010

I noticed when I got home last night that the section of southwestern Petworth around the Metro has been delared a drug free zone — beginning at midnight tonight and ending on midnight, April 6th.

For those having difficulty reading the boundary statement, I’ve included it below:

Starting in the northwest corner of the zone at the intersection of the curbline on the east side of Georgia Ave., NW and the curbline on the south side of Randolph St., NW, proceed east along the curbline to the intersection of the curbline on the south side of Randolph St., NW and the curbline on the west side of 8th St., NW. Proceed south along the curbline to the intersection of the curbline on the west side of 8th St., NW and the curbline on the north side of Rock Creek Church Rd., NW. Proceed west along the curbline to the intersection of the curbline on the north side of Rock Creek Church Rd., NW and the curbline on the east side of Georgia Ave., NW. Proceed north long the curbline, finally returning to the starting point.

NWCHCA Hosts MPD Presentation on Drug Awareness Tonight

March 15, 2010

According to Northwest Columbia Heights Community Association president Cecilia Jones, if you are concerned about drugs and drug culture in our neighborhoods, you won’t want to miss tonight’s meeting. A description of the meeting from an email distributed to various listservs is below:

A seasoned MPD Detective will give a “show-and-tell” presentation to help us recognize the different types of drugs in our community. We will learn more about drug distribution methods, pricing, and drug paraphernalia associated with crack cocaine, marijuana, heroin, and the most serious growing threat, PCP. You will learn ways to recognize the signs of drug use, and know which drug is being used through distinguishing features or behaviors–heroin, crack cocaine, PCP, crystal meth, marijuana, or others.

There are also many unexpected ways that children and teenagers are getting high. We will learn what parents and concerned adults should know to keep our young people from becoming addicted to drugs.

After the drug awareness presentation, to complete this topic, we will have a discussion about substance abuse recovery with a panel of providers: Neighbors Consejo, Second Genesis and Gospel Rescue Ministries.
