2nd Annual Lower Georgia Avenue Chili Cook Off a Great Success

The 2nd annual Lower Georgia Avenue Chili was a great success, with five different delicious chilis for people to choose from. Competition was stiff. The competition was organized by Georgia Avenue Thrive, District Bridges, and DSLBD.

As you can see from Commissioner Michael Wray’s tweet, the place was packed and we had a great panel of judges.

It was an honor to be among the judges and taste some great chili from The Looking Glass Lounge, DC Reynolds, The Midlands, Call Your Mother Deli, Timber Pizza Company, & NuVegan Café. Every chili was wonderful and it was a hard choice.

Much congratulations to all the contestants for highlighting the talent we have right here in the neighborhood, and to Midlands for getting the best overall award from the Judges & to DC Reynolds for winning the Peoples’ Choice award.

Reliable Tavern was packed and I’m already looking forward to next year.

District Bridges & ANC1A Commissioners Walk Georgia Avenue to Share Ideas on Supporting Small Businesses, Addressing Local Challenges

One of the more important aspects of the Park View and Pleasant Plains neighborhoods is the growing business community along Georgia Avenue. It is a place where new businesses have been opening along side long-time establishments creating a vibrancy that is as diverse as the community it serves. But alongside that growth, we continue to have vacant storefronts and lots as well as rising rents that have negative impacts along the corridor.

To foster a better understanding of the needs, challenges, and opportunities that exist on Georgia Avenue, ANC1A Commissioners Kent Boese (1A08), Michael Wray (1A09), and Rashida Brown (1A10) met up with District Bridges/Lower Georgia Avenue Main Streets very own Jennifer Kuiper. The group met up at Amen Coffee & Juice (3661 Georgia Avenue) and walked south to Columbia Road. Along the way, we discussed issues about specific areas and chatted with community members and business owners.

The walk included catching up with former ANC1A Commissioner Bobby Holmes.

A highlight of the walk was stopping in at Sonnys Pizza to get a sneak peek.

Holiday Lighting Event Scheduled for Park View/Petworth This Friday on Georgia Avenue

Last Friday, District Bridges hosted their annual tree lighting at the Columbia Heights plaza. This year, as part of their effort with the Georgia Avenue Main Street, they will be hosting an event on Georgia Avenue (see flyer to the right).

This Friday, December 7th, a holiday lighting event is schedule for Georgia Avenue. The event will begin at 6:30 pm and is at the corner of Rock Creek Church Rd and New Hampshire Avenue, outside the old Sweet Mango.

Last night I caught up briefly with District Bridges’ Jennifer Kuiper who was with volunteers from Howard University wrapping up a day decorating the building in advance of Friday. The photos below give an idea of what to expect.
