Gee’s Market Renovating, Plans to Reopen Soon

January 23, 2018

Gee’s Market at Warder and Otis, NW.

Gee’s Market, at Warder Street and Otis Place, is currently undergoing renovations. I had a chance to stop by last week, briefly chat with the owner, and peak inside. It was largely empty and it looks like the space is being reconfigured. It was too early to tell what the final result will be so I’ll be checking in again soon.

I have received a few questions about the sign announcing “Coming Soon” and listing wine and beer. The “Coming Soon” refers to the renovations, not the wine and beer. Gee’s has had an ABRA license to sell beer and wine for many years, and during the last renewal process the ANC entered into a Settlement Agreement with Gee’s to address issues with the store that occurred in 2013 and earlier.

Checking Out Columbia Heights’s Odd Provisions

December 19, 2016

Odd Provisions(Odd Provisions, located at 3301 11th Street, NW).

Over the weekend, I finally found time to check out Odd Provisions, a small grocery that recently opened at the corner of 11th and Lamont streets in Columbia Heights. According to their Web site, “Odd Provisions is a contemporary corner market providing fresh and convenient food and household necessities to the residents of Columbia Heights and Park View. We feature the products of local farmers and artisans as well as a curated selection of craft beer and wine.”

Upon entering the store, I liked what I saw and can definitely see myself shopping there. While it isn’t overstocked (possibly due to how new it is), what I liked was that there is a selection of items that aren’t typically found in the larger chain stores — and definitely not in our immediate neighborhood. I found crème fraîche  in the cooler area, a nice selection of wines, vinegars, and mustards, and other specialty items such as truffle oil.

Below are a few photos to provide an idea of what to expect.

Gee’s Market Has Business License Revoked

March 15, 2013
Gee's Market is located on the southeast corner of Warder Street and Otis Place.

Gee’s Market is located on the southeast corner of Warder Street and Otis Place.

Readers may recall that on February 22nd, officers with the Third Police District made a significant seizure of 50 pounds of KHAT as well as several cartons of cigarettes not authorized to be sold in the District of Columbia at Gee’s Market (3583 Warder Street, NW).

As a follow up, late yesterday MPD’s Commander Kimberly Chisley-Missouri sent out an email that informed the community that due to MPD’s efforts working with other DC Government agencies, the business license of Gee’s Market was revoked earlier in the day. Her email continued: “There has been several community complaints regarding this establishment and we will continue to work with our partnering agencies as this case makes its way through the judicial process.”

In related news, at the March 13th ANC 1A meeting, the Commissioners voted unanimously to request that Gee’s liquor license be revoked. This request was made due to the business’s history of infractions and its location across the street form both an elementary school and recreation center.
