Former Amanuel Market Retooling as Coffee Shop

July 11, 2017

The former Amanuel Market at 3661 Georgia Avenue, NW

I’ve been hearing scuttlebutt that the former Amanuel Market located on the southeast corner of Georgia Avenue and Rock Creek Church Road will be becoming a coffee shop. There’s certainly been a lot of work going on there lately.

In checking out the building permit database at DCRA, looks like this is indeed what is intended. Following is the description from DCRA:

“USE CHANGE FROM CONVENIENCE STORE WITH ACCESSORY PREPARED FOOD SHOP TO FOOD PREPARATION AND COFFEE SHOP. BY KEEPING THE EXISTING MECHANICAL , ELECTRICAL AND PLUMBING AS IS WITH THE ADDITION OF ADA COMPLIANCE HANDICAP ACCESS BATHROOM, THREE COMPARTMENT SINK , UNDER COUNTER FREEZER AND COFFEE BREW.”

I think a coffee shop will do well at this location and hoping it turns out great!

Colony Club Celebrates Opening of Patio on Friday, July 31st

Colony Club, located at 3118 Georgia Avenue.

Colony Club‘s rear patio is finished and open. To celebrate the new patio, they will be having an opening event this Friday (July 31) beginning at 5 p.m. Colony Club is located at 3118 Georgia Avenue and well worth the visit.

As part of the celebration, the Timber Pizza food truck will be parked out back. There will also be a DJ, a balloon artist, and drink specials. It should be a fun way to wrap up the week.

Below are some photos showing how the patio turned out. I thought it was wall thought out, attractive, and like the inclusion of the planters.

Colony Club Set to Open on Wednesday, April 22nd

April 20, 2015
Colony Club, 3118 Georgia Avenue.

Colony Club, 3118 Georgia Avenue.

We’ve eagerly been awaiting the opening of Colony Club, located at 3118 Georgia Avenue in the former MaMa’s Southern Cuisine space. Now, a little more than a year since Colony Club began their project, the are done and will open for business at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, April 22nd.

The business will operate as a coffee shop between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., and then transition to a bar with a limited food menu in the evenings between 7 p.m. and  10 p.m. Check out the Colony Club Website for more details on their food and beverage offerings.

Over the weekend I stopped in and talked with Max Zuckerman, the public face of Colony Club, which gave me the opportunity to see how the space has been transformed. Inside and out, Colony Club is a class act. For the first time in my memory, the building has curb appeal and is inviting. Upon entering the space, it is light, uncluttered, and comfortable with a mid-century modern feel to it. Everywhere one looks — even in the most simple details — one can see that fit, finishes, materials, and colors, were chosen thoughtfully resulting in a truly welcoming space.

Presuming their coffee, pastries, and service live up to the quality of the renovations, Colony Club will fast become a neighborhood favorite.

Below are a few photos from my recent visit:

April 13, 2015

Heat Da SpotLooks like Heat Da Spot Cafe, a new coffee spot at 3213 Georgia Avenue will be opening soon. Work was in full swing in August 2014, and by checking out the business yesterday, it looks like the are poised to open soon. They’re also up on Twitter where they’ve been posting updated and have a Website, though their menu isn’t posted yet.

I’m definitely excited about this and look forward having a new business in the neighborhood soon.

Love Coffee? Check Out Harrar’s Weekly Coffee Ceremony

November 20, 2014

I haven’t written about Harrar Coffee & Roastery in a while, and thought time was overdue to give them a shout out. I’ve yet to be disappointed in a visit there, and find it a good way to get a day off to a good start.

While there last Saturday, I learned that on Saturday’s starting at 11:30 am, Harrar has their weekly Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony, at which they also provide free samples of their coffee. Yet one more reason for me to really love this business.

If you love coffee, and haven’t stopped by Harrar yet, you might want to give them a try. They are located at 2904 Georgia Avenue, a little south and across the street from Bravo Bar. Hours of operation are Monday thru Friday 6am-8pm, Saturday 7am-8pm, and Sunday 7am-7pm.

Tibet Shop to Become a Coffee Shop

September 23, 2013
3213 Georgia Avenue destined to become a coffee shop.

3213 Georgia Avenue destined to become a coffee shop.

Here’s some great news for the neighborhood. According to Metro Investment Properties, who  alerted me via Twitter, the former Tibet Shop is in the midst of a build-out to become a coffee shop. Located at the corner of Georgia Avenue and Keefer Place, NW — and with a nice sidewalk area suitable to outdoor seating — it would be a great location of a coffee shop. It is also nicely located between Harrar Coffee to the south and Qualia Coffee to the north.

I doubt there will be anyone who doesn’t prefer a neighborhood coffee shop over Petworth Liquors which a few short months ago was hoping to move to this location.
