DDOT Reviewing Potential Bikeshare Station for Central Park View

March 5, 2019

DDOT continues to review locations to expand their Capital Bikeshare program to meet growing community demands for the service. They have identified a new location that looks promising — the northeast corner of Morton Street and Georgia Avenue. Based on DDOT’s preliminary review, there are no parking or traffic impacts to installing a station at this location because it is not in the roadway. The sidewalk is 12 feet wide, so with the bikeshare station installed there would be a six foot pedestrian travel lane, which meets the standards in the Americans with Disabilities Act.

I know that a location in central Park View has been something that many have wanted for years, so the location helps meet that demand as well. The station would be placed next to “Adventure Dental” on the Morton Street side. The following photos provide a better idea of where the station could go.

Looking for Opportunities to Increase Area Bikeshare Service & Stations

June 21, 2016

Over the past several days I’ve been digging into the community amenities proposed by the redevelopment of Park Morton and thinking about ways to enhance and improve the proposal. One thing that came to mind is the potential to improve the Capital Bikeshare program in the Park View area. While this may not sound like a big thing, a quick look at the locations of Bikeshare stations in the area, and how they are being used, gives an indication that the community is a heavy user of the system and there aren’t enough bikes or stations to go around. It also seems like the Park Morton development project could help enlarge the Bikeshare station that is currently at Columbia Road and even establish a new station on the 600 block of Morton Street with minimal impact to the project’s design or bottom line.

The map below shows area Bikeshare stations shortly after noon on Monday, June 20. The amount of red indicates the number of available bikes. It is worth nothing that several of the stations have 1 or no available bikes. The significant exception here is the one at the hospital center, which is a commuter destination rather than a point of departure.Bike share stations noon(Capital Bikeshare stations near Park View and Columbia Heights mid-day on June 20, 2016.)

It has been established for a while that our area tends to lose bikes over time as there are many residents who will bike to work, yet not all of them will bike back home after work. This requires Bikeshare to visit stations with a van to fill up the empty bike docks on a periodic basis.

Looking at the same bike stations shortly after 9 p.m. shows the inverse relationship as there are many more bikes in the area — but also highlights that there are still many empty bike docks and some empty bike stations. Having another Bikeshare station on Morton Street would be of benefit to the community and help ensure that those who use this service would have an easier time of having an variable bike when they need one.

New Capital Bikeshare Station Coming to 16th and Irving Street

March 9, 2016

A new Capital Bikeshare station is scheduled to be installed at 16th and Irving streets, NW, next to the school. The installation may begin as early as March 10th. In their letter to the ANC informing them of this new station, DDOT stated that the selection of this location was based on several factors such as population and employment density, proximity to Metro and requests from the public.

DDOT’s Draft Bikeshare Development Plan Released for Public Feedback

October 9, 2015

I was excited to see that DDOT has released their draft Bikeshare Development Plan, and its open for public feedback. The public comment period is open through November 15th.

According to the DDOT announcement, the “draft plan establishes a set of goals, measures, expansion plans, and financial projections for the next six years for the District of Columbia’s portion of the Capital Bikeshare program.” You can read the 143 Bikeshare Development Plan online and comment on this webpage http://dcforms.dc.gov/webform/capital-bike-share-form until November 15, 2015.

Capital Bikeshare expansion mapWhat I particularly like is the proposal to add two new bikeshare stations to the Park View area in 2017. While its hard to see on the map (click on map to right for larger version), the two stations being considered appear to be around 1) Park Road and New Hampshire Avenue and 2) Warder Street somewhere between Kenyon and Park Road.

I think this is an excellent opportunity to advocate for expanding the bikeshare system in the neighborhood and I encourage those who feel strongly about this or where stations should be located to fill out the feedback form.

You can read the overview of the expansion from the Development Plan after the jump (more…)

Capital Bikeshare Station at Georgia and New Hampshire Relocates

July 3, 2012

Due to the Middle Georgia Avenue Great Streets work at the intersection of Georgia and New Hampshire Avenues, the Capital Bikeshare normally located on the southeast corner of the intersection has been relocated to the northwest corner. As you can see from the photograph above, if you are a regular user of Capital Bikeshare, you now have to cross Georgia Avenue to the area in front of the old Engine Co. 24 facade to get a bike.

I know that this is going to be an inconvenience to many residents who rely on Bikeshare to get to work, but trust that it will only be temporary.

UPDATE: I’ve just learned from DDOT that after construction, the Bikeshare station will remain at its current location at the Northwest corner of Georgia Avenue and New Hampshire Avenue. The streetscape project will be installing two new tree boxes near the original location, which would create congestion if the station were put back in the original location.

Also, the 4 additional bike racks in the 3500 block of Georgia Avenue were installed today. This brings a total of 8 bike racks in the area near DC Reynolds, Blue Banana, and the Looking Glass Lounge.
