July 28, 2015

Colony Club, located at 3118 Georgia Avenue.

Colony Club‘s rear patio is finished and open. To celebrate the new patio, they will be having an opening event this Friday (July 31) beginning at 5 p.m. Colony Club is located at 3118 Georgia Avenue and well worth the visit.

As part of the celebration, the Timber Pizza food truck will be parked out back. There will also be a DJ, a balloon artist, and drink specials. It should be a fun way to wrap up the week.

Below are some photos showing how the patio turned out. I thought it was wall thought out, attractive, and like the inclusion of the planters.

Walters Opening in Park View This Friday

July 15, 2015

Following up on my May 9th announcement that the former Blue Banana/Park View Patio space would become a new bar/tavern called Walters, I’m please to announce that plans are to open this Friday at 5 p.m. Walters is located between Looking Glass Lounge and DC Reynolds at 3632 Georgia Avenue..

Last night I was able to check Walters out during a soft opening. My initial impression is very positive, and this seems like the first business in the space over the last 10 years that actually understand what a business needs to, well, stay in business. Overall, it was comfortable and welcoming.

Currently, the food selection is limited to house-made beef jerky, warmed and salted pretzels, baked buffalo wings, foot long hotdogs, a side salad, and traditional potato salad. Starting on Friday there will also be two sandwich choices as well. This is all a far cry and an improvement over the previous businesses in this space. There is also a small kids menu, complete with a connect the dots puzzle and a coloring page. Not bad.

I believe Walters has a lot of promise, and may prove to be a home run once its in the swing of things.

Below are a few photos from my visit.

Colony Club Set to Open on Wednesday, April 22nd

April 20, 2015
Colony Club, 3118 Georgia Avenue.

Colony Club, 3118 Georgia Avenue.

We’ve eagerly been awaiting the opening of Colony Club, located at 3118 Georgia Avenue in the former MaMa’s Southern Cuisine space. Now, a little more than a year since Colony Club began their project, the are done and will open for business at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, April 22nd.

The business will operate as a coffee shop between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., and then transition to a bar with a limited food menu in the evenings between 7 p.m. and  10 p.m. Check out the Colony Club Website for more details on their food and beverage offerings.

Over the weekend I stopped in and talked with Max Zuckerman, the public face of Colony Club, which gave me the opportunity to see how the space has been transformed. Inside and out, Colony Club is a class act. For the first time in my memory, the building has curb appeal and is inviting. Upon entering the space, it is light, uncluttered, and comfortable with a mid-century modern feel to it. Everywhere one looks — even in the most simple details — one can see that fit, finishes, materials, and colors, were chosen thoughtfully resulting in a truly welcoming space.

Presuming their coffee, pastries, and service live up to the quality of the renovations, Colony Club will fast become a neighborhood favorite.

New Signage at Park View Patio & Milk Cult Pop Up Shop

December 11, 2013

If you haven’t visited or walked past Park View Patio (at 3632 Georgia Avenue) lately, you may not have seen the new signage on the front of the building. You can see it below.

Park View Patio

Also, according to New Columbia Heights and the City Paper, Park View Patio is now hosting a pop-up shop from Milk Cult and Vigilante Coffee known as The Sanctuary.

milk cultThe Sanctuary, as reported by the City Paper, has coffee, breakfast tacos, ice cream, pastries, and other baked goods during the day when Park View Patio is closed. The breakfast tacos—$3.50 each—will all be made with sous-vide scrambled eggs. The three varieties will include bacon, potato, and hollandaise; corn beef hash; and fried green tomatillo. Milk Cult will provide a rotating selection of ice cream sandwiches and, eventually, scoops and pints in flavors like milk honey, salted caramel, and buttermilk lemon zest. The pastries and baked goods will come from Rare Sweets, which like Milk Cult, works out of Union Kitchen.

The continuously evolving food scene in Park View is starting to get very interesting, indeed.

Park View Patio (former Blue Banana) Opens Tonight in Time for Halloween!

The former Blue Banana — which closed in April this year — will open to the public tonight as the Park View Patio. From the time news first broke about the revamping of the Blue Banana, the name of the new business has been in flux. Most recently, it appeared that it was going to be called the York Patio before the owners settled on naming it after the neighborhood.

Park View Patio opens Halloween Night with a $20 open bar from 8-11 p.m.

The interior has been somewhat remodeled, as has the exterior where the sleek metal window trim has been removed and replaced with a rustic wood veneer. The business is also addressing the lack of food — a large factor in the closing of the Blue Banana. While the business will open without a kitchen, the are planning to install one and hope to have it built out sometime this winter.

To address appetites in the mean time, Park View Patio’s Facebook page indicates that they’ll “be teaming up with several vendors from the Union Kitchen food incubator to provide various pop-up food experiences. Purveyors such as Milk Cult, Ravioli Revolution and Green Eggs and Burgers have already signed up to satisfy your culinary curiosities.

In fact, Green Eggs and Burgers Twitter feed indicates that they will be providing the food options tonight. You can check out their food offerings at the Green Eggs and Burgers Website.

A question that I’ve receive a few times — and which the emphasis on the name’s “patio” has prompted — is if this business has much of a patio. The former Blue Banana had a modest patio, but Park View Patio has expanded that to include the large outdoor space behind Gina’s Beauty Salon at  3630 Georgia Avenue. You can get a sense of how large the patio is from the plan drawing below.

Last night was Park View Patio’s soft opening. To give you a sense of what the interior is like, I’ve provided a few photos from last night below.

Blue Banana Closes, Relaunch in the Works

April 16, 2013
The Blue Banana, 3632 Georgia Ave., NW.

The Blue Banana, 3632 Georgia Ave., NW.

I’ve recently learned that the Blue Banana officially closed for good last Wednesday, April 10th. The business was rarely busy largely due the absence of food. One needed look no further than the Looking Glass Lounge and DC Reynolds to see what a difference food would have made.

I’ve been told that the establishment will be getting a new management team that will rework the space and reopen a new bar with a new name and concept. They are  also looking into having a kitchen and possibly a rooftop deck. No timeline or details beyond this are available at this time.

All of this sounds promising. I’m especially glad that the name will be going. The reference to the bar in the movie Pretty Woman where the prostitutes hung out may have been amusing to the owners, but I found it to be in bad taste.

Park View’s DC Reynolds Now ‘Unofficially’ Open for Business

March 20, 2012

Here’s some exciting news. At long last, DC Reynolds will have a soft opening for the neighborhood tonight. Food will be served from 5:00 to 8:30 p.m. They will stay open later for drinks only. DC Reynolds is located in the former Huron Pharmacy at 3628 Georgia Avenue — just a few doors south of Looking Glass Lounge and Blue Banana.

The Grand Opening will not be for a few weeks yet, but they expect to be fully open starting on Thursday.

According to partner Jeremy Gifford, the menu will include their Fried Chicken, Meatloaf, Mac N Cheese, Hummus, Bratwurst, Bacon Cheeseburger, Sliders, and Kimchee Popcorn. I had the opportunity to sample some of their food over the weekend and found it flavorful and definitely see myself becoming a regular.

Gifford also wrote to me that they will be debuting their “Yes that too” happy hour.  From 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., buy one get one free on drinks. When a customers asks “does that include ________” their response will always be “Yes that too”

Sounds good to me and I couldn’t be happier to have another small business in the neighborhood.

Finishing Touches Continue at Blue Banana

January 19, 2011

The nearly month old Blue Banana (3632 Georgia) with new illuminated sign

In the month since the Blue Banana opened, the bar has continued to address its punch list of items that were not quite finished. The most obvious change is the contemporary sign in front. It only includes two elements, the address of 3632 and a cut out of a banana in mid-peel. In the evening both cut outs are back lit in blue.

Along the lines of the more mundane, since the opening, hooks have also been installed along the bar for purses, etc., and additional lighting has been ordered for the bathrooms.

While food still isn’t available there yet, I understand that they are still finalizing the selection of a vendor and menu options.

Hoping to enhance customer’s experiences, Blue Banana is also exploring the possibility of providing live music, though the details have not been worked out. At this time they are hoping to have cover bands a few nights a week.
