New Panamanian Restaurant Coming Soon to Georgia Avenue
July 17, 2015A new Panamanian Restaurant, called Esencias Panamenas, is in the process of opening in the former Rita’s Caribbean restaurant space at 3322 Georgia Avenue, between Morton and Lamont.
Earlier this week, the owners applied for a liquor license, so expect to see placards go up in the near future. The application describes the business as a sit down restaurant with casual dining and a family atmosphere that will serve Latin/Caribbean food. The application includes endorsements for entertainment and a sidewalk cafe.

Another Restaurant Opening Soon at 3303 Georgia Avenue
May 11, 2015Thanks to Park View neighbor Zach for providing the following heads up — the storefront at 3303 Georgia Avenue (next to the former Mothership) is being fixed up to be a small sit down/carry out restaurant called “Jocelyn’s”. The business should be open in a couple of weeks. I look forward to learning more about this business as they get nearer to opening.
Florida Avenue Grill Planning to Add Outdoor Seating
April 16, 2015

At last night’s ANC 1B Transportation Committee, the owners of the Florida Avenue Grill presented a proposal for an outdoor cafe and sought an endorsement from the committee — which they ultimately received. It will need to be reviewed by the full ANC prior to becoming official.
Imar Hutchins, who has owned the grill since 2005, presented his plan that would included four two-tops along the Florida Avenue side of the building and a larger area along 11th Street that would include four four-tops and a twelve seat community table (see plan below) — for a total of 36 additional seats.
The Florida Avenue Grill has been in business since 1944, and you can read their history from the Grill’s Web site. The addition of a sidewalk cafe should only be a positive for both the restaurant and the surrounding community.

Checking Out Alphonse Italian Market & Osteria
February 24, 2015A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to check out Alphonse Italian Market, located at 1212 U Street, NW. Overall I thought the interior was inviting and the food was good. Due to the chill in the air, I decided to start with a hot meatball sandwich, which I would order again. That said, I’m really interested in how their pizzas are. I’m also curious if anyone else has had an opportunity to eat at Alphonse. If so, what did you order and would you recommend it?
You can check out the menu at the Alphonse Web site as well as see what their hours are.
Below are a few photos I took while I was there to give you some sense of what the restaurant is like.

Final 2 Days for DC Born & Raised — Baba’s Dumplings Coming to EatsPlace This Saturday
January 6, 2015EatsPlace at 3607 Georgia Avenue (web site here) is down to the final two days of the DC Born & Raised pop-up (Wednesday & Thursday) so if you haven’t checked them out you’ll need to do so quickly.
EatsPlace’s next featured pop-uppery will be Baba’s Dumplings, helmed by Katy Chang, which will make hand-kneaded dumplings and soup noodles. Katy is one of the founders of EatsPlace, and EatsPlace will also be featuring her Baba’s Cooking School line of award-winning hot sauce and a new line of bitters.
Chang writes: “One of the reasons I founded EatsPlace was to allow chefs to share their food with the community. I’m happy to have the opportunity to present my own food, which was inspired by my Baba (dad), who was a chef … “I also am excited to be able to feature a line of Baba’s Cooking School Bitters as all natural aromatic flavor enhancers. In Chinese culinary tradition, bitter foods are keyed to the heart. So it is with all of my heart that I make and present these bitters.”
The Baba’s pop-up will soft open starting this Saturday, January 10th, with limited hours 6-9 and then regular hours starting on Sunday, January 11th.
The Baba’s Dumplings menu is below.
