Disturbing Video of 77 Market Vandalism and Robbery

July 1, 2015

Last Saturday, June 27th, there was a horrible robbery at 77 Market located at Georgia Avenue and Irving Street, NW. I know many in the neighborhood may already know about this, but I’m sure other don’t. In reading the report and watching the video on Fox 5, this is far more disturbing that what one would normally think of with a robbery. According to the Fox 5 report:

It was caught on camera — a dangerous duo struck a Park View convenience store. But this was far from your typical stick up. There was no gun — just fury — enough to turn the store upside down. And the store’s cashier is just thankful to be alive after the close encounter.

I’ll definitely be working with Commissioner Rashida Brown and MPD to address what appears as a serious crime trend in the area. I know that for the past few months that crimes data from the DC Crime Map shows an overall increase in nearly all statistical areas. I’ve had a few leads as to why, and want to make sure that the community works with MPD to solve this persistent problem.

Be on the Alert for Two Mischievous & Destructive Neighborhood Youth

October 27, 2014
Stolen, and recovered, holiday decorations.

Stolen, and recovered, holiday decorations.

Yesterday, as I was walking home from Georgia Avenue up Princeton Place, I saw two young African American boys, around the age of 7 or 8, riding bikes south on Warder making a commotion and carrying Halloween tombstone decorations. Upon looking closely, I realized that the tombstones they were carrying were, in fact, from my yard. I followed them onto the Park View Rec Center grounds, confronted them, and recovered the decorations. Initially, they denied stealing them, but finally fessed up when I wouldn’t let it go. They also indicated that other decorations had been stolen and blamed an older youth for that. I had them show me where the youth lived, and along the way I was shown another tombstone that they had destroyed. I also called the police to report the theft. All in all, five tombstones were stolen. One was destroyed, three were recovered, and one is completely gone.

In talking to another neighbor on Princeton Place I was informed that these two boys are trouble and have been riding their bikes around the area recently. The neighbor on Princeton relayed a story on how the boys have been digging around in a construction dumpster on the street and leaving their bikes in the street. He confronted them, made them get out of the dumpster for their safety, and watched them ride away. Later, the boys came back, went onto his property and pulled construction debris off of his yard and dumped it on the sidewalk to get even.

While these may seem like simple issues, in both cases the boys came up into the front yard of the property as far as the house and maliciously destroyed or removed property.

As a word to the wise, be on the look out for these two youth and be mindful of anything you may have in your front yard that is unsecured. Also, don’t hesitate to call the police if you see them destroying private property.

When reading the daily crime reports, as many residents do, it is easy to wonder what if anything ever happens to those arrested committing crimes. Yesterday afternoon the 4D listserv posted the release below about a robbery that happened on the corner of Georgia Avenue and New Hampshire on October 6, 2012. It references a check cashing establishment which can only be the Ace at  3663 Georgia Avenue.

I found the report to be more detailed than most and, as it happened in the neighborhood, it will also be of interest to many.

District Man Sentenced to Four Years in Prison

For Robbery at Check Cashing Store

-With Help From Witnesses, Police Made Quick Arrest-

WASHINGTON – Michael Mitchell, 41, of Washington, D.C., was sentenced today to a four-year prison term after earlier pleading guilty to robbing a check cashing store in Northwest Washington, U.S. Attorney Ronald C. Machen Jr. announced.

Mitchell pled guilty to a robbery charge in December 2012 in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. He previously was convicted of multiple violent and theft-related offenses dating to the 1990s. He was sentenced by the Honorable Lynn Leibovitz. Following his prison term, Mitchell will be placed on three years of supervised release.

According to the government’s evidence, Mitchell entered a check cashing store at Georgia and New Hampshire Avenues NW at about 9:35 a.m. on Oct. 6, 2012. At the time, six other customers waited in line, including the victim. After entering the store, he approached the victim, an immigrant to the United States who worked two jobs as a nursing assistant and was in the store to send money home to her family in Uganda. Mitchell then grabbed the victim’s purse and an envelope containing money for her family.

The victim fought back and Mitchell ripped the items from her hands and ran out of the store. Multiple eyewitnesses came to the victim’s aid and helped her chase after her attacker, keeping him in sight. Members of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) were called and caught Mitchell fleeing in the 3500 block of New Hampshire Avenue NW.

In announcing the sentence, U.S. Attorney Machen commended the work of the MPD officers and detectives who investigated the case, as well as the citizens who came forward to assist the victim. He also thanked Paralegal Assistant Todd McClelland and Intelligence Specialist Sharon Johnson for their work on this case. Finally, he acknowledged the efforts of Assistant U.S. Attorney Phil Selden, from the Superior Court Felony Major Crimes Section, who prosecuted the case.
