Columbia Heights Farmers Market Planning Weekday Expansion This Summer
At last night’s meeting of ANC 1A Executive Director of Community Foodworks Jeff Stottlemyer spoke before the assembly about plans to expand the Columbia Heights Farmers Market to Wednesday nights this season.
In April Community Foodworks that was awarded a grant as a partner on a groundbreaking national health and nutrition initiative led by Wholesome Wave. The grant provides funding to help us launch an innovative CSA program for low-income customers who can pay with SNAP, which will be one of the first of its kind in the country. Community Foodworks is the only partner on the national initiative in Washington.
The program will be launched soon as part of a suite of new health-focused partnerships with other community organizations (e.g., We Are Family and La Clinica Del Pueblo) based at a pilot Wednesday evening market, which is also being supported by the grant. The goal is for the market to take place from 4-7:30 p.m. during the summer months; it will be roughly half the size of the regular Saturday market, no vehicles will be parked on Kenyon Street during market hours, and the Columbia Heights Civic Plaza fountain will remain on.

I like it in theory… but can foresee traffic nightmares on Kenyon street at the worst possible time. Pardon me if accusing the organizers of being too selfish in not planning for that…

Very excited about this news! Because most people who use the market walk or bike there, it won’t add much to the vehicular traffic but we’ll see. It seems the organizers did consider traffic impact by ensuring the community that their trucks won’t be parked on Kenyon (and it will have fewer vendors than participate on Saturday). What a great mid-week shopping option for the whole community.
