The long awaited improvements to the Bruce Monroe Park originally announcement in April 2013 are finally underway. $200,000 was programmed to improve the park in 2013 by including two new water fountains and a shade structure — including seating, large enough to accommodate gatherings and programming.

It has taken a lot of effort and advocacy, but the improvements are finally underway with the goal of being completed by July 30th. To date, the two (2) water fountains have been installed, the shade structure is almost complete and eight (8) of the benches will be installed on July 25th (today) if all goes well.

The photo below shows the shade structure nearing completion.

Will they have someone regularly pick up the trash around there? It always seems to be covered in trash.

  2. K Says:

Yes, the trash problem is really sad. Perhaps more bins and dare I say litter enforcement.

Happy for the improvements you have highlighted which will make it more inviting and accommodating to all in the neighborhood

While its great there are improvements being made, my concern is that the more they improve the site the less likely it will ever be redeveloped, even partially. And this site was never intended to be a park.

There is enough redevelopment going on along the Georgia Ave corridor including small buildings turning into or being replaced by large condo/apartment buildings, but few green spaces. There are enough untapped development projects (i.e. vacant lots, shuttered or dilapidated businesses) to go around, that the corridor needs this space to remain green, and become a excellent destination green space, for a neighborhood with such a baby-boom, rather than one in limbo for redevelopment.

What would you like to see the park redeveloped into (even if partially)?

Any plans for additional play structures for kids or improvements to the existing play structures? That northeast corner would host a great spray park area.

would be great to eliminate the parking lot. Not necessary and it is always empty. A waste of good park space.
