Wrap Up on Last Weeks Joint 3D/4D Police Meeting

mpdc-logoI wanted to give an overview of last week’s joint MPD Third District/Fourth District Meeting. To sum it up succinctly, the meeting was well attended, successful, and lasted about an hour and twenty minutes. The meeting room at the 4D Substation was packed. There were about 75 participants, with over 60 participants being residents of the immediate area.

The chief participants representing MPD were Chief Lanier, Commander Kishter (3D) and Commander Missouri (4D). 4D’s Inspector Medina also addressed the community.

What was particularly helpful was Chief Lanier’s willingness to answer questions and provide an overview of crime in the area. There was very little time dedicated to sharing of statistics, which has been a feature of PSA meetings in the past.

Among the numerous topics discussed were:

  • the usefulness of security cameras
  • neighborhood walks/watch
  • known hot spots,
  • student parties in group houses, and
  • some information on recent crimes

It was clear that Park View has a very engaged citizenry that truly cares about public safety. Should the level of community engagement continue in future meetings, police officers will be better able to proactively address crime trends in the area.

Councilmember Graham arrived late in the meeting. His request was for an evaluation on the effectiveness of the change in the 3D/4D border which took effect nearly two years ago. Chief Lanier responded that a report will be conducted in January.

As a follow up to last week’s meeting, a Third and Fourth District Border Crime Meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday, November 20th, at 7 p.m. This meeting will also be held at the 4D Substation located at 750 Park Road, NW. It’s a great opportunity to keep the dialogue going that began last week.

Comments of student parties in group houses – was it just Howard? Or are there other students that live in large numbers in Park View?

Thanks for the update, Kent. I’m glad Chief Lanier is aware there have been some issues. I’l be at the next one for sure. Was there any movement on the neighborhood walks/watch? Should I be signing up for something?

Thanks Kent – Was there any specific discussion of the Rec Center, and ensuring that drug activity stays away?

    • Kent Says:

The rec center came up in the discussion … but with regards to drug activity several locations were noted that MPD needs to be aware of.
