NDC’s Heights Project Set to Start in January 2012

As was brought to my attention by a reader, the Washington Business Journal reported yesterday that the Neighborhood Development Company’s (NDC) long delayed Heights project has finally secured financing. In following up with NDC’s Adrian Washington, he confirmed that the development is set to begin in two to three weeks.

The joint NDC/MiCasa Inc. project was originally planned to start in the fourth quarter of 2010. As I wrote in August 2010, the property — located on the southwest corner of  Georgia Avenue and Lamont Street (between 3224 and 3234 Georgia Ave.) — will be a mixed use, mixed income development designed to contain 69 units with 10,000 square feet of ground floor retail space. At least 50 % of the units are planned to be market rate with the other 50% of the units being affordable at 60% to 80% of the Average Median Income.

Once ground breaks the project will take 16 months to complete, placing its finish at the beginning of 2013.

    What I’d like to know is what kind of business we should be lobbying to get at that location. 10,000 sq. ft. of retail is a lot of space. Any ideas?

    Did Adrian mention any news about the Vue project which was approved to go right after but had the same financing issues delaying it as the Heights?

    The Heights is great news and I would suggest a bike shop which would be perfect for this area. Also other suggestions might be a coffee shop or a sit down restaurant (such as Mediterranean which is lacking). Another place I’d love to see is an outdoor adventure store though since I don’t believe there is one anywhere in the area.

      We didn’t talk about the Vue this time, but if memory serves it will follow the Heights … so getting the Heights underway helps get the Vue closer to reality. I doubt we will see any action with the Vue in 2012 though.

    I’m glad GA Ave is picking up but this building is ugly and uninspiring. I get the feeling DC is doomed to mediocre architecture forever.

    Is this the corner of Kenyon and GA? Wow, so ready for it. Don’t like the architecture but it will probably look ok – like that Colbert building @ Harvard. I would love an REI store there.
