Updated Tree Plan for Princeton Place

(Map showing placement and type of trees coming to Princeton)

Last week I reported that two trees were scheduled to be cut down on the 600 b/o Princeton Place, with a plan to plant some new smoke trees on the block. Based on comments I received on this blog and in person while talking to residents, I decided I needed to speak to DDOT’s Urban Forestry Administration and find out exactly what their plans are for the new trees on Princeton.

As you can see from the map above, the current plan includes the following:

  • 2 smoke trees
  • 2 katsura trees
  • 2 overcup oaks
  • 2 red horsechestnuts

In reviewing this list, I’m pleased that it totals 8 trees, rather than the 6 I originally expected, and that there is a nice variety of trees. Additionally, while the smoke trees generally get to be  between 15-20 ft. tall when mature, from what I was able to discover katsuras mature between 40-60 ft., overcup oaks mature between 60-90 ft., and red horsechestnuts mature around 35 ft.

The trees will be planted with other trees in the neighborhood during the coming street tree planting season that will run from October 2011 to April 2012.
