May 2011 Update for Middle Georgia Avenue Great Streets Project.

DDOT has issued another periodic update for progress on the Middle Georgia Avenue Great Streets project which runs between Webster Street, NW, and Otis Place, NW. You can read the outline of what DDOT is currently working on below.

Additionally, residents interested in development along Georgia Avenue may consider attendting the ANC 1A Meeting tonight. Tarek Bolden of the Office of Planning will be presenting the OP’s Georgia Avenue Retail Action Strategy Plan at the ANC meeting. The presentation will be based largely on aspects from the Georgia Ave.-Petworth Action Strategy drafted in December 2009.

Monthly Project Update, May 2011

CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES:

Georgia Avenue between Otis Place and Princeton Place:

  • Excavation and installation of duct banks – temporary restoration.

Georgia Avenue between Princeton Place and Quebec Place:

  • Excavation and installation of duct banks – temporary restoration.
  • Excavation and installation of new curb and gutter.
  • Install new PCC sidewalk and permeable pavers.

Georgia Avenue between Quebec Place and New Hampshire Ave:

  • Excavation and installation of duct banks – temporary restoration.
  • Excavation and installation of new curb and gutter.
  • Install new PCC sidewalk and permeable pavers.

Georgia Avenue between New Hampshire Ave and Quincy Street:

  • Excavation and installation of new curb and gutter.
  • Install new PCC sidewalk and permeable pavers.

Georgia Avenue between Quincy Street and Randolph Street:

  • Excavation and installation of new curb and gutter.
  • Install new PCC sidewalk and permeable pavers.

Georgia Avenue between Varnum Street – Webster Street:

  • Additional landscaping and edging.

9th Street between Taylor Street and Kansas Street:

  • Additional landscaping and edging.

Various Locations:

  • Install new Streetlight foundations.
  • Install new Streetlights.
  • Install new Traffic Signals.
  • Access manholes.

ANTICIPATED TEMPORARY TRAFFIC IMPACTS:

Various Locations:

  • Construction tasks will require temporary, daytime parking lane closures, 7:00am-5:00pm, and temporary travel lane closures, 9:30am-3:30pm.
  • Pedestrian traffic to be re-directed with detours along sidewalks where excavation is occurring. Access to businesses and residences will continue to be maintained.

NEW, PERMANENT TRAFFIC AND PARKING IMPROVEMENTS:

  • 9th Street from Upshur to Kansas:  Parking will change from parallel to diagonal parking on the East side of 9th Street. Travel lane will remain one-way northbound.
  • 9th Street from Taylor to Upshur:  Parking will change from parallel to diagonal parking on the West side of 9th Street. Travel lanes will change from (2), two-way travel lanes, to (1) travel lane, one-way southbound.

PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT PLANS:

To assure successful coordination, we will continue engaging all affected residents, businesses, and other key stakeholders by completing the following this month;

  • Distribute weekly construction notices to any affected businesses or residents along the work limits.
  • Continue to post “Rebuilding D.C.” signs along the most impacted work areas.
  • Follow-up on any e-mails or phone calls pertaining to questions about this project.
  • Participate in the monthly Construction and Policy Meetings.

In addition, for members of the community interested in providing feedback on the expansion of the Capitol Bikeshare Program in this area, there will be a public meeting on Wednesday, May 25th, from 6-8 pm. The meeting will be held at 441 4th Street, NW , Room 1107.

This month we would like to welcome back the Petworth Community Farmers Market. You can visit the market starting Friday, May 20th, and every Friday thru September, from 4-8pm. The vendors will set-up on 9th Street NW, between Taylor Avenue and Upshur Street. For more information about the Petworth Community Farmers Market contact manager@petworthmarket.org .
