Park View New Year’s Options

Residents wanting to stay close to Park View to celebrate New Year’s Eve have few options in the neighborhood, but the outlook is brighter than last year. The only true bar a year ago was the Looking Glass Lounge, which is still an option and also offers food.

If grabbing a bite to eat before heading out is your thing, two restaurants new in 2010 are Sala Thai (above the Georgia Ave.-Petworth Metro) and Top Spanish Cafe at Newton & Georgia. Both have great food and pleasant atmospheres.

Another recent addition to Park View is the Blue Banana which is showing early promise. According to their Facebook page, they will be open from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. and provide a champagne toast at midnight (details to the right).

Despite a rather negatively slanted post on the Prince of Petworth blog yesterday — which I might add was a little bizarre considering the Blue Banana has only been open for nine days and is still in their soft opening process — many people have enjoyed their visits and speak well of the place. Blue Banana doesn’t serve food yet, so make sure you eat before going.

If none of these options work for you, as with years past you’ll probably want to think about some of the places in nearby Columbia Heights or a little further down on U Street.

If I missed a local favorite, please share it in the comments.
