Signs of Summer: Fireworks and Caribbean Carnival

Last year's fireworks stand

Two signs that the Summer season has begun are fireworks and the Caribbean Festival. The wooden structure that will soon be laden with fireworks has already arrived on the northeast corner of Rock Creek Church Road and New Hampshire. It won’t be long before looks like image above.

The Caribbean Festival is also this weekend. If you haven’t been to this before, you really owe it to yourself to experience this at least once in your life. The parade frequently reminds me of a Caribbean form of Mardi Gras. According to the Festival’s Web site (expect music on every page if you go there):

The annual Extravaganza Parade will be staged along the Georgia Avenue corridor on Saturday, June 26, 2010 , and will commence at Missouri Avenue at 11:00 a.m. and terminate at the international marketplace at “DE SAVANNAH” – Banneker Recreation Park. DC Caribbean Carnival will host the international marketplace at “DE SAVANNAH ” from 12:00 noon to 7:00 p.m featuring food, craft and entertainment.

Sunday June 27, 2010 -DC Caribbean Carnival will continue hosting the international marketplace at Banneker Park , “DE SAVANNAH ” with live performances from local and international artists , food, craft and entertainment from 12:00 noon until 7:00 p.m.
