DCCares and local schools are teaming up to help make the holidays a little brighter here in Park View by turning the old Tudor style building at the Rec into a Santa’s Workshop for area children to participate in crafts and create special gifts for their loved ones. The first workshop is scheduled for Monday, December 7th. Click on the flyer to the right to find contact information if you can donate materials or time.
Area DCCares resident Kirsten Snyder is coordinate the Santa’s Workshop, and provides the following detailed information:
BACKGROUND OF THE PROJECT:
Park View Recreation Center (DC Parks & Recreation) has teamed up with local schools and DCCares to turn the old Park View Rec Center building into Santa’s Workshop, offering neighborhood kids a safe place to choose or make gifts for their families.
DONATIONS:
I’ve attached a flier with some more detailed info about the project, including a list of suggested donations that we still need. We’re looking at over 800 kids coming through the Santa’s Workshop from the two local elementary schools and after-school programs, which means that we’ll need about 3000 gifts or crafts. At this point, we have commitments to cover about half of that thanks to the generosity of local businesses, neighbors, work colleagues and friends. But we’re still looking for other gifts/crafts, supplies, and refreshments.
All donations are tax deductible and in-kind donations of more than $50 will be recognized by the Recreation Center in a handout going home with the children. Greater DC Cares will send you a receipt via email.
Feel free to be creative! A microwave bag of popcorn + a bowl decorated with a paint pen can be repurposed into “Dad’s Football Kit” or “Mom & Dad’s Date Night Kit.” A tea bag + a mug could be decorated as “Teatime with Grandma.” Whatever donations you can provide, I’m sure that we’ll be able to find a use for it.
There are two potential drop-off points for donations:
1) Greater DC Cares HQ
1156 15th St NW
Ste 840
It is two blocks east of Farragut North.
Normal Business Hours 8AM-5PM Mon-Fri
You can leave them with anyone and tell them it’s for Nuri.
2) Park View Recreation Center
Otis and Warder NW
It is four blocks south and east of the Petworth Metro Stop.
Open 2-9 Mon-Fri and 10-4 on Saturdays.
You may leave donations with Jamar or Toni.
VOLUNTEER SHIFTS:
If anyone is interested in volunteering, we still need a few more volunteers to work the following shifts, helping kids choose or make the gifts, serving refreshments, etc.
Wednesday Dec. 9th, 3:30-5:30PM
Monday Dec. 14th 10AM-12PM
Wednesday Dec. 16th, 3:30-5:30PM
Friday Dec. 18th , 3:30-5:30PM
Note: DC Parks and Recreation requires a background check for volunteers working directly with kids, but they can accept checks done previously for DC parks or DC schools, and waive the requirement if the volunteer is a student or parent. Please let me know if you would like me to send you the info.
Outside of these times, we also need volunteers to help solicit donations of small gifts and crafts and/or help to set up and decorate. Since I can’t take time off my day job, I’m mostly helping with this side of the project. We’ll also be decorating this weekend:
Sat. 12/5 10am-12pm
Sun. 12/6 10am-12pm
If interested in volunteering, please contact Kirsten by e-mail (kirs10snyder@yahoo.com) or phone (202-368-3676) as soon as possible.
