At-Large Candidate Forum Tonight at Park View School — Brief Notes from Saturday’s Georgia Avenue Walk
Tonight, March 12, at 6:30 p.m. the Georgia Avenue Community Development Task Force (GACDTF) will hold their forum for the candidates seeking the at-large seat on the D.C. Council. The forum will be held in the auditorium of the Bruce-Monroe @ Park View School located at 3560 Warder Street, NW (between Newton and Otis Places). According to Sylvia Robinson of the GACDTF, all at-large candidates have confirmed their attendance.
The candidates are:
- Sekou Biddle
- E. Gail Anderson Holness
- Vincent Orange
- Peter Shapiro
- Ann Wilcox
- Mary Brooks Beatty
- Lee Aiken
E. Gail Anderson Holness gave a rousing speech at the start of last Saturday’s Georgia Avenue Walk (3/10/12). Due to other engagements, she was not able to participate further. The other candidate to participate in the walk was Peter Shapiro, who arrived shortly after the start of the walk and was able to participate for a good portion of the event.
Keeping in mind that the walk was postponed a week due to weather, there was a decent turn out of residents from the area. The focus of the event was on issues related to small businesses, new development, parking, and housing as they pertained to the lower Georgia Avenue corridor.
One of the highlights for me was when developer John Xanthos addressed the group in front of the Murry’s grocery store (3400 Georgia Ave.). Xanthos spoke about the eventual closing of Murry’s to be followed by new development and a new tenant — perhaps another grocery store.
Based on what Xanthos shared, the develpment sounded to be several years out and details were slim. None-the-less it is something I’ll be watching and, as information becomes available, will be sharing.
