Four Shot, One Fatally, Near Gresham Place & Georgia Avenue
The Washington Post reports that not everything was peace, order, and calm along the Georgia Avenue corridor yesterday. Shortly after 5 p.m. near the intersection of Gresham Place and Georgia Avenue, one man was fatally shot and three others were wounded. Three of the four victims were from outside the neighborhood.
Assistant D.C. Police Chief Diane Groomes stated that the shooting had no connection to the DC Caribbean Parade, which was largely over by that time. MPD reports that nearly 20 shell casings from at least two guns were recovered as well as one firearm on Gresham Place.

What is the ANC position on this? While I love the parade itself, it seems to be difficult to separate the day long GA ave and side street party that follows. More than 20 shots fired at 5pm!!! The financial trouble that the festival is in is also worrisome. Will taxpayers be asked to support this violence next year?

I’m not aware of an official position on this, but I’m sure this is something that will be discussed.

Where may I read about the financial problems of this event? It must be very costly – a fleet of no less than 12 street sweepers was trying to clean up at 7:00 but the partying was still ongoing and they were unable to move. The partying into the adjacent neighborhoods was more than I have ever seen (I live 1/2 block off GA). Since when is it ok to sell fireworks at this event? Gangs of children were breaking bottles and setting things on fire with them -

Assuming the organizers remain financially solvent, I think it’s time to move the parade, festival and post-parade chaos out of a residential neighborhood to a venue that can be more effectively controlled and policed, perhaps the grounds of RFK stadium.
