Fishing at the Soldiers’ Home, 1963
As Cultural Tourism DC will be hosting a walking tour of the Soldiers’ Home grounds tomorrow, I thought the image below was appropriate for today. This image of Mr. Gilchrist fishing on the grounds in 1963 is likely among the last to have been taken of a neighborhood resident using the grounds prior to their closing in 1968.
UPDATE: Dispite the details shared in the initial post about the tour, I’ve just learned (5/21/10) that Cultural Tourism was, in fact, taking reservations. Those that did not make reservations may still get in by just showing up, but could be turned away if the group is too large. The tour will be offered again in the Fall.
